8 Ways to Make a Great Paralegal

by Gutwein Law

As we approached the nine-year work anniversary for one of our outstanding paralegals, we asked the question, “What makes a great paralegal?”  In every field, there are key characteristics necessary for a job well done, whether it’s an outgoing personality or the ability to switch gears in an instant.  We’ve outlined the keys to success that make our dedicated staff of paralegals indispensable.

Attention to detail:

Accuracy and attention to detail is a must.  Whether it’s drafting corporate documents or preparing a deed, the little details are important.  When reviewing documents, our attorneys rely on our paralegals as a second set of eyes.

Ability to see the big picture:

On the other hand, successful paralegals need to be able to visualize the desired result.  Although our paralegals are focused on the details, they can’t accurately complete their assignments without the ability to see where the details are taking them.  When looking at a situation, our paralegals prepare for every possible outcome and are ready for the next step.

Calm and collected personality:

A law firm is a busy and stressful place.  When deadlines are fast-approaching and the work seems to pile up, our paralegals stay level-headed and focus on each task at hand to prevent mistakes.

Willingness to take on new tasks and areas of practice:

In an ever-growing business like Gutwein Law, willingness to take on new tasks is crucial.  As attorneys with different skill sets are added to the practice, our paralegals adapt their focus areas as well.

Constant improvement:

Because the law is always changing, staying up-to-date on the latest legal changes is just as important for a paralegal as it is for an attorney.  Our paralegals continue to educate themselves and improve their knowledge base.

Adaptability:

From a brainstorm session with five other people to working alone drafting an operating agreement, a successful paralegal must thrive in many different situations.  To do so, our paralegals adapt to their surroundings and move quickly when doing so.

Communication:

Communication is necessary in every aspect of life, and work in the legal profession is no exception.  Our paralegals must be able to communicate effectively with attorneys, our clients, and other legal teams.

Consistency:

For many reasons, consistency is a vital part of a law firm.  For starters, training new staff is quicker and easier if every person is using the same guidelines for every project.  When projects are completed consistently, errors and inconsistencies are noticed and corrected more quickly.  Overall, the efficiency increases when there is consistency with every project, no matter which paralegal and attorney completed it.

We are lucky to have such a talented group of paralegals working with us.  Without their hard work and dedication to Gutwein Law and our clients, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
